Arcanum Bestiarum news

Hand-pulling a “Lioness” woodcut printer’s ornament.

We’re now in the final stages of preparation for the 2012 Esoteric Book Conference September 15th and 16th. A selection of new prints have been framed and are now awaiting packaging for safe transport to Seattle. Further prints (both editions and trial proofs) are being bagged and boarded for the print racks. Be warned, due to space limitations quantities will be limited to just 1 or 2 of each Arcanum Bestiarum print. If you’re keen for a look at the entire body of prints before the Arcanum Bestiarum is released later this month, stop in the art show early!

The Esoteric Book Conference art show will be in the Orcas room of the Seattle Conference Center and is free and open to the public as well as conference attendees. An array of works from the featured artists: Anima Nocturna, Don Farrell, Liv Rainey-Smith, Denny Sargent, Daniel A. Schulke, and Lis Wright-Avec, will be on display, with many available for purchase. I cannot speak for the other artists, but I will be in the art room periodically throughout the conference and am always happy to answer inquiries.

Detail of the Goat as it will appear in Arcanum Bestiarum, and as the carved woodblock before printing

Not able to make it to the conference? Further shows are coming. A selection of the Arcanum Bestiarum works have been accepted into Splendorporium’s Annual Tarot Show opening October 5th in Portland, Oregon.

Raven and Scorpion pre-orders will begin shipping September 13th, place your order now to guarantee availability.

Last but not least, here’s a preview of the Goat! (Click image to enlarge.) Goat will be available as a limited edition of just 11 signed and numbered hand-pulled woodcuts. 15 x 20.75″ on cream cotton rag paper.

Bestiary print pre-order

Note: purchasing of these prints is no longer a pre-order. Orders are currently shipping within 48 hours (excepting weekends and holidays).

In mid-September the original woodcuts from Arcanum Bestiarum will be officially debuting at the Esoteric Book Conference in Seattle. Although conference attendees will have the first opportunity to peruse the entirety of the bestiary prints including editions and artist proofs, we’re offering a pre-order on the two beasts already unveiled by Three Hands Press: the Raven and the Scorpion. More species will be made available for online ordering following the release of Arcanum Bestiarum

Lioness printer’s ornament

To thank you for your support, all pre-orders will include a signed open edition printer’s ornament. The ornaments measure 11 x 6.5″ (2 x 7″ block size) and are printed using the same ink and paper as the limited editions. Allow me to select one at random for you, or let me know your preference when ordering: Ant, Chimera, Dragon, Hawk, Lioness (seen above) Ram (may be seen here), or “Revels.”

Raven
Woodcut edition of 22

As with all of my prints, the Bestiary series were hand-carved in wood and printed on an etching press with archival oil based-black ink on hand-torn Rives BFK paper. I print with enough pressure to emboss the thick cotton rag paper and create as solid of a print as the wood will permit. Each print is titled, signed, and numbered.

Birth of a Raven

The phrase “hand-pulled print” refers to exactly what you see here. Hands (in this case belonging to print minion Bryn) pulling the print off the matrix (in this case a woodblock) after pressing (in this case via an etching press).

Pre-order on the Raven edition coming soon. Subscribe to our mailing list if you’d like to be e-mailed about pre-orders, special events, and new work.

Arcanum Bestiarum

Now available for pre-order from Three Hands Press

I’d like to thank you all for your patience this year as I’ve worked in secrecy on my largest series of woodcut prints to date. I’m happy to announce this series will be gracing the pages of Robert Fitzgerald’s, “Arcanum Bestiarum” available for pre-order now from Three Hands Press.

The first showing of the original woodcut prints from the series will be at the Seattle Esoteric Book Conference this September, though if you’d like a preview of a few select pieces I will be showing a couple at RAW:Solstice this Thursday night at the Bossanova Ballroom.

Print edition sales and further showings to be announced.

Prints from Children of Cain

At long last I am able to share the pieces created for Michael Howard’s newest book, Children of Cain. Appearance of these artworks in and on the books varies depending on the edition type (standard hardcover, deluxe hardcover, and special hardcover). Please see Three Hands Press for more information on the book editions.

As with all of my prints, these were hand carved in wood and printed on an etching press with archival oil based-black ink, and off-white Rives BFK. Each print is signed and numbered. A limited quantity of lower numbered prints are available as matched number portfolio sets. See below for further details and ordering information.

First class shipping has been included in the prices below, please select the international option if you are located outside the United States of America.

As always, please contact me if you have any questions, concerns, or would like to arrange for another form of payment.

This weekend in Seattle and Portland

"Death and the Printmaker" (After Holbein)

The Esoteric Book Conference starts this Saturday! I’m looking forward to a weekend packed with fine books, authors, artists, and performances. Many new titles will be released at the conference and I’m thrilled to be debuting my first works for Three Hands Press. (I’m also looking forward to sharing them here — but I can’t do so quite yet, so I hope my non-EBC-attending collectors will forgive me for the delay.)

I’ll be in Seattle by tomorrow night, but those of you in Portland, OR may be interested in attending the Atelier Meridian Ink & Drink from 6-9pm Friday the 9th at 665 N. Tillamook. I’ve given the Atelier my “Death and the Printmaker” to screen print on t-shirts as part of the fundraiser. Bring your own shirt or purchase one there!

Where does the time go?

This year as been absolutely flying by, and now as I stare at my calendar it tells me there are only two weeks left until the Esoteric Book Conference. One of my favorite annual events, I’m extra excited this year as it will be my first as both a featured artist and an artist associated with Three Hands Press. I’ll be showing for the first time, the prints created for Children of Cain as well as a few other selected works. As wall space is limited, an even larger array of woodcuts will be available bagged and boarded including prints on goatskin and sheepskin parchment.

Danse Macabre woodcut in progress

As I prepare for the trip to Seattle, I’m also finishing up the block to the left. This will be printed as an edition of 15 for La Calaca Press’ “Calacas” themed print exchange. My inspiration is Hans Holbein’s “danse macabre” series depicting Death paying a visit to everyone from farmers to emperors. Scenes such as these were intended to remind the viewer of their own mortality and encourage proper moral behavior. I may have a few disagreements with traditional views as to what “proper” behavior constitutes, but recent reminders of the fragility of life have served to increase my drive to make the most of my life. Thus I wield the tools of my trade in response to that hourglass.

On the subject of making the most of it, I just found out I’m listed as an artist at The Lovecraft’s art fair tomorrow afternoon. I hadn’t been planning on participating this month, but my plans for tomorrow fell through earlier today, so I’ll be there with my full line of Lovecraft works from 3-6pm. Stop in and have a cold one!

Also on the 2nd and 3rd weekends of October you’ll be able to visit my studio during the Portland Open Studios Tour. I’ll be sharing the space with Carolyne Landon and we’ll both be demonstrating our techniques as well as answering questions and showing our work. All ages will be welcome and our studio is wheelchair accessible. Please visit the Portland Open Studios Tour website for more information about this annual event.

Book Announcement

My first project with Three Hands Press, Michael Howard’s Children of Cain has been announced and is now available for pre-order.

Quoting Three Hands Press: “Collecting over forty years of research, much of it never before appearing in print, this definitive work details such obscure Old Craft figures as Monica English and Alastair Clay-Egerton, as well as its better-known proponents such as Robert Cochrane and George Pickingill. Lavishly illustrated with both colour and black and white photos, we will be offering three editions of the book, two featuring the cover artwork of Liv Rainey-Smith.”

The original woodcut prints will be available as hand-pulled limited editions at the Esoteric Book Conference.
