2014 Holiday events & Black Friday offer

Hi, folks! I hope you all had a safe and happy Halloween. It seems like we skipped directly from summer to winter here in Oregon, and this chilly weather already has me thinking about the upcoming holiday season. If you’re in the Portland area and looking for unique holiday gifts, I hope you’ll join us. Read on for the details!

First, you still have a few opportunities remaining to catch my show at Redux in Portland, Oregon as well as my Beasts of Lore solo show at Rogue Gallery in Medford, Oregon. The Redux show runs through the end of this month, and Beasts of Lore closes on Friday, November 21st, so if you’d still like to catch either of them, act now!

Then, the Oregon College of Art and Craft Annual Student and Alumni Holiday Sale is beginning in late November at the OCAC campus located at 8245 SW Barnes Rd. The sale, which will feature the work of 70 artisans from around the Pacific Northwest, will be open to visitors Friday, November 28th from 5 – 9PM; Saturday, November 29th from 10AM – 4 PM; and Sunday, November 30th from 10AM – 3PM. Proceeds will help to fund OCAC student scholarships.da Vinci Arts Fair 2014 Postcard

On December 6th and 7th, I’ll be at the da Vinci Arts Fair at da Vinci Arts Middle School at 2508 NE Everett St. in Portland, Oregon. Held annually on the first weekend in December, this PTSA-run event helps to subsidize arts and academic classes at da Vinci Arts Middle School. The show features the work of community artisans and da Vinci students, as well as a snack bar and crafts room where kids can make their own art to take home.

To commemorate the tenth anniversary of the da Vinci Middle School Arts Fair,  I was invited to create my own woodcut version of da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. You can see photos from her creation here. I’ve printed Mona as a very small edition of just 10 signed and numbered prints on cream rag paper. Mona #1 of 10 has been framed and will be raffled off at the Fair with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the students of da Vinci Arts Middle School. #2 through #10 will be available unframed for $80 each during the Art Fair. If you’re unable to attend and would like to acquire Mona, please contact me to reserve one. All online sales of Mona have been pledged to benefit the school just as those sold during the fair. In addition to Mona, a wide selection of other favorite prints including the recent mini zodiac series, the last of the Krampus edition, and a full array of magnets, will be available at the da Vinci Arts Fair. I hope to see you there!

Free shipping through December 10th!

Not in Portland? Can’t make it out? Don’t want to go out in this cold? I’ve got you covered! Instead of offering a one-day Black Friday or Cyber Monday deal, now through December 10th, you can have your order shipped free. If you’re in the United States, use THANKS2014 for free shipping on orders of $20 or more. International collectors, please use WINTER2014 for free shipping on orders of $50 or more. These codes are applicable in both my online store and Etsy shop. Don’t be surprised if you find some bonuses in your package; this is the season of giving after all!

Finally, with Thanksgiving approaching with gathering speed, I’d like to take a moment to share my gratitude that I am employed as a working artist and to thank you all for your ongoing interest and patronage. Life as a working artist certainly isn’t the simplest, but it is much more fulIfilling than my past life as a clerk in a big box store. I hope your holidays are bright!

Who is Krampus?

Also of note, “Gruss vom Krampus” translates to “Greetings from Krampus” and is the most common greeting found on vintage Krampus ephemera.

The second edition of Krampus prints is nearly sold out, if you’d like an original, don’t wait too much longer!

Need a stocking stuffer? We also have Krampus magnets.

EBC, zodiac, and more upcoming shows.

The 2014 Esoteric Book Conference has come and gone and as always it was a fantastic weekend. Some of my personal high points included sitting in on the truly excellent presentations, the diversity of the artwork on display, and getting to see Timo Ketola’s phenomenally detailed ink drawings in person. There was a particularly positive response to the secret piece I mentioned in my most recent blog post and newsletter. (More details will be forthcoming once I’m granted permission to share them, so stay tuned.) Thank you to everyone who was able to attend, and to those who were unable to make it we hope to see you there next year!

Those of you who’ve been following the development of the new zodiac series will be happy to learn that it’s now available through Xylographilia and Etsy. You may find individual prints of each of the twelve signs of the zodiac available on cream or white cotton rag paper, complete sets of all twelve prints, and four unique prints hand-colored with genuine mineral pigments (currently available only on Etsy).

If you don’t see a hand-colored version of your favorite sign, I will be offering more in the near future and am open to discussing custom color schemes on Zodiac prints. You should allow up to four weeks of turnaround time for custom color, so if you’re planning ahead for the holidays I encourage you to get in touch as soon as possible.

For those of you in the Portland area, Xylographilia’s next big event will be the opening of my show at Redux Boutique & Gallery on October 3rd. Redux, located at 811 E Burnside #110 in Portland, specializes in handmade art, accessories, and jewelry produced by local artisans and fairly traded import companies internationally. They’re also bi-monthly participants in the First Friday Art Walks on Lower

East Burnside. We’ll be showing a mix of Halloween-appropriate art as well as the new zodiac prints. Magnets will also be available, so if you’re in the area I encourage you to drop by and check it out. Show runs through late November.

Also in October, the opening reception of my very first solo gallery show, Beasts of Lore: The Xylographic Art of Liv Rainey-Smith, will take place at Rogue Gallery & Art Center in Medford, Oregon on October 17th. The reception will last from 5 – 8 PM in the community gallery. Located at 40 S Bartlett St., RGAC is considered a premiere gallery space for exhibiting artists as well as an invaluable community resource due to their art education program which provides classes and workshop opportunities for children and adults. The solo show will feature a selection of my illustrations from the Arcanum Bestiarum and will be on display at RGAC through November 21st.

Finally, progress on the Mona Lisa tribute for this year’s da Vinci Arts Fair continues. I’m still in the thick of the carving stage and am sharing process photos on Facebook. The completed print will be auctioned to benefit da Vinci Arts Middle School during the fair on December 6th and 7th.

Mythos & Monsters opens at Gargoyles Statuary August 15th

I will be attending the opening night reception of Mythos & Monsters at Gargoyles Statuary as part of the Seattle U-District Artwalk. If you’re in the Seattle area on the evening of August 15th between 6 and 9 PM, drop by and say hello! This is an opportunity to preview the original woodcuts featured in P.S. Publishing’s upcoming Starry Wisdom Library Anthology edited by Nate Pedersen, and to peruse Gargoyles’ selection of my unframed prints and magnets.

The show will run until mid-September. Refreshment will be provided at the opening.

Those who are unable to attend may be interested to learn that Tsathoggua and Figure 7. are also available online. Other new works will be released on this site at a later date.

“The man did not speak, and bore no trace of expression on his small, regular features. He merely pointed to a book of prodigious size which lay open on the table, while the beldame thrust a huge grey quill into Gilman’s right hand. Over everything was a pall of intensely maddening fear, and the climax was reached when the furry thing ran up the dreamer’s clothing to his shoulders and then down his left arm, finally biting him sharply in the wrist just below his cuff. As the blood spurted from this wound Gilman lapsed into a faint. ”

This weekend: The Esoteric Book Conference

Just a quick reminder, I’ll be spending this weekend hosting the Art Show at the 5th Annual Esoteric Book Conference.

The Art Show and Book Room are open to the public from 9:30am – 6:45pm on Saturday the 14th, and 10:30am – 6:45pm on Sunday. Featured this year are the works of Hagen Von Tulien, Divine Mania, Joseph Uccello, Kate Merriwether Lynch, and Daniel A. Schulke. Original prints and reproductions will also be available from a number of other artists including Don Farrell, Kat Lunoe, Orryelle Defenestrate-Bascule, and a few Three Hands Press artists including me.

Upcoming shows

Raven Artist Proof with 23k gold, garnet, lapis lazuii, yellow ochre, and hematite

We’ve been busy cutting mats, bagging and boarding prints, and I’ve been gilding and hand-coloring some unique artist proof prints in preparation for late summer/fall shows. A few new woodcuts are in the works, though it may be some time before they are unveiled. Additionally, a new website is also in the works, which is why we’ve fallen behind on updates here. If you’d like a peek at what is new, I highly recommend a jaunt by my art page on Facebook. It is regularly updated with photos and tidbits.
